Why your website isn't getting leads, and how to fix it

A website that gets visitors but no enquiries usually has one of six problems: no clear next step, slow pages, a layout that is hard to use on a phone, too few people finding it, no reason to trust the business, or slow replies to enquiries. This guide covers each one and how to fix it.

1. No clear next step

Every page should tell visitors what to do next: call, book or send an enquiry. If that action is hard to find, visitors leave without taking it.

How to fix it: Use one main call to action per page, near the top and again after the main content, with a label that says what happens, such as "Request a quote".

2. Slow pages

Slow pages lose visitors before they read anything. Google says its ranking systems use Core Web Vitals, and it publishes thresholds for loading, responsiveness and visual stability.

How to fix it: Run your main pages through PageSpeed Insights, then compress images, remove scripts you do not use and fix content that jumps as the page loads.

3. Hard to use on a phone

If buttons are small or text needs zooming, visitors on phones give up. The accessibility standard WCAG 2.2 sets a minimum target size of 24 by 24 CSS pixels for buttons and links, with some exceptions.

How to fix it: Test the enquiry path on a real phone: find the contact button, fill in the form and submit it. If the layout fails on phones across the whole site, a redesign with mobile-first layouts rebuilds it.

4. Nobody finds the site

A site that does not appear for the searches your customers make has few visitors to convert. Search work starts with the basics on your own site and your business listing.

How to fix it: Complete your Google Business Profile, give each page a clear title, and create a page for each main service. Our SEO services page covers the technical side.

5. No reason to trust you

Visitors look for signs that you are a real business before they enquire. Your ABN, address, phone number and reviews all help.

How to fix it: Show your contact details on every page and link to your Google reviews. Only publish testimonials and results you can back up.

6. Slow replies to enquiries

An enquiry that waits a day may already have gone to someone else. The visitor also cannot tell whether the form worked.

How to fix it: Send an automatic reply that confirms the enquiry arrived and says when you will respond.

Two smaller problems

  • Long forms. Ask only for what you need to reply: usually a name, a contact detail and a short message.
  • Stock photos. Photos of your own team, premises and work tell visitors more about your business.

Checklist

  • A clear call to action on every page
  • Pages checked against Core Web Vitals
  • Enquiry path tested on a phone
  • Google Business Profile complete
  • ABN, address and phone number visible
  • A short enquiry form
  • An automatic reply to every enquiry

If the site itself is the problem, the website redesign page describes how we approach a rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my website not generating leads?

Usually because visitors cannot see a clear next step, the pages load slowly, the site is hard to use on a phone, or it does not appear in search. Weak trust signals and slow replies to enquiries also cost leads.

How can I tell if my website needs a redesign?

If visitors arrive but rarely enquire, start by testing the enquiry path on a phone and checking your pages against Core Web Vitals. If fixing the content and forms does not help, or the site is hard to update, a redesign may be the better option.

How much does it cost to fix a website that doesn't convert?

It depends on what is wrong. Changes to calls to action, forms and content can be small jobs, while a redesign is quoted against a written scope.
